Now all the Christmas festivities are well and truly over, we have all probably noticed we have gained a few extra pounds through over indulging over the festive period.

Being active has many benefits including helping weight loss, reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, some cancers and can also help improve your mood. Although exercise does all the above only a third of adults are active enough to feel the benefit. This does not have to be the case.

As part of its ongoing commitment to the Healthy Borough initiative East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Sport Development Team offers a variety of activities available for the very young to older people and everyone in between. We have a variety of target groups including inactive adults, sports specific projects, disability sports, elite athletes, older people and school aged children.

For the inactive adult (16 years+) who has not exercised for a while but would like to get fit in a fun and friendly environment we have: Back to Netball, Thursday, 6pm – 7 pm at Meadowside Leisure Centre, cost £1.00. Mars Just play football sessions Monday 7pm – 8pm at Shobnall Leisure complex, cost £1.00. Run England Beginners Running courses Wednesday, 10.45 am meet at Bramshall Park, Cost £16 for 8 weeks Females only) and Thursday, 7 pm, Uttoxeter Leisure Centre, Cost Free!

For the older adult we have the Active Adults programme which includes: Extend, Zumba Gold, Move It or Lose It classes, plus many more. Our Walking for Health programme has 8 different walks across the borough led by qualified and friendly walk leaders. Our walks range from 10 minutes to over an hour, something to suit everybody.

Our disability sport programme includes: daily Inclusive cycling, weekly football and powerchair football sessions and activity clubs.

There are also a variety of activities for school aged children including: Netball for school years 5 – 8. Thursday, 5pm – 6pm at Meadowside Leisure Centre Cost £1.00.

Councillor Robert Hardwick, Deputy Leader for Cultural Services, said:  “now the holiday season is over and a new year has began it is time to get active. The Sport Development Team and our partners can offer something for everyone wanting to be active and healthy. It is recommended that adults exercise for 150 minutes each week and children 5 -18 years, 60 minutes every day”. Throughout January look out for #GetFitFor15.”
