Summary:

The Mellow Dramatics are pleased to announce their next production: Oh What a Lovely War, coming to the Brewhouse Arts Centre, Burton on Trent in May 2014.  We are reviving Joan Littlewood’s satirical musical to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

When performed according to Littlewood’s specifications, Oh What a Lovely War looks like a Pierrot show – one of those seaside concert parties in front of which generations of British holidaymakers licked ice cream and ignored the wind.  Every early 20th-century resort had one, staffed by a gang of all-round entertainers in the pom-poms and pantaloons of the sad-faced clown.

Our production of Oh What a Lovely War borrows the clothes and the organising principle: our actors play many parts – soldiers, generals, suffragettes, politicians, profiteers and spies, parading before you, the audience, in a series of quick-fire scenes.

You will enjoy a musical packed full of familiar songs such as ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’, ‘Pack up Your Troubles’ and ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ from the First World War era, as well as other familiar tunes.  Oh What a Lovely War is a powerful comment against war in general and its message remains relevant to modern audiences.

The first act is designed to draw the audience in with the sentimentality of the songs, as the first explosion does not take place until the end of Act 1 during ‘Goodbye…ee’. Act 2 then brings the reality of war to the production.
