Tutbury Castle is opening its doors for an all day fundraiser for the Queen’s Hospital Burton who are seeking to buy equipment for their new birthing pool. The theme for the day will be “all the fun of an English Seaside” so please bring your inflatables, deck chairs and wind shields!

There will be midwives present in costumes ranging from the medieval period, right through to the fifties style – currently made so popular by the hit TV series “Call the Midwife” – and finally to the 2013 midwife.

The public will have a chance to not only see the costumes, but to also see some of the equipment used in childbirth over the centuries.Lesley Smith, Curator of Tutbury Castle, will also be giving talks throughout the day about the procedures of childbirth in the sixteenth century.

Said Lesley Smith, Curator “We are absolutely delighted to offer this fundraising day to Burton Hospitals and, as childbirth and conception of the sixteenth century is of a particular interest to me in my academic studies, it seems so suitable to have the event here. The eccentric seaside day in the middle of England is also appealing and just such a British sense of humour. Those who have been fortunate enough to have enjoyed great support from their birthing experience I am sure will want to support this event. Everyone is welcome.”

All children who arrive in water themed costumes such as fish or mermaids will receive a prize!

The Great Hall will be open with guided tours as well as our pretty tea room serving a range of hot and cold food – all reasonably priced.
