East Staffordshire Borough Council has launched two new publications to assist private landlords and benefit tenants in Burton on Trent.

“Property standards – a simple guide for landlords” is a short booklet to make it easy for landlords to check that their property is suitable for letting. It explains the basic legal requirements and the main housing health and safety hazards encountered in East Staffordshire. The Council aims to get a copy to every landlord with property in the Borough.

To Let Signs

“The Bond Scheme Information Pack” contains all the information a landlord may need about the Council’s Bond Scheme which provides landlords with a guarantee instead of a deposit. The pack includes questions and answers, and is aimed at landlords who are willing to consider tenants receiving Housing Benefit but who would normally ask for a deposit.

Philip Somerfield, Head of Regulatory Services, said: “The Council really values the provision of good quality housing by private landlords in the Borough. If you are a landlord these publications will help make things clearer and easier. If you are a prospective tenant they are designed to improve the options available to you.”

Andy O’Brien, Chief Executive, added: “This approach sits alongside our suite of interventions in relation to private sector landlords to help support tenants, such as our Landlord Assessment scheme. Indeed, the Council takes its responsibility to work closely with landlords very seriously for the benefit of tenants”.

Landlords are invited to request a copy of one or both of the publications by emailing housingstrategy@eaststaffsbc.gov.uk or by calling 01283 508149 during office hours.
