Councillor Richard Grosvenor, Leader of the Council, said: “It is great to be able to offer an attraction to the people of the borough that many would normally not have the opportunity to participate in. We really want to make visiting the town an enjoyable experience, and would love to attract new visitors to the town and the borough as a whole.

“We are also pleased to announce that the rink will be free to use on both the opening night and Christmas Eve.”

Councillor David Leese, Deputy Leader for Partnerships added: “This, along with the movement of the outdoor market to Station Street, is the first sign of the Market redevelopment taking place.

“As part of the plans, this is the first of many events that will continue to be held on the Market Square, attracting people to this area and helping the surrounding local businesses along the way”.

The ice rink is being run with the support of Burton Town Centre Management and will launch on the first day of late night shopping in the town. Skating on the rink will be free on the opening day (22nd November) and on Christmas Eve. At all other times, the costs will be £5 for adults and £3.50 for children.

Paul Howard, Town Centre Manager commented: “An ice rink is something we have wanted to include as part of the town centre festive celebrations for some time now but our efforts have been hampered due to a lack of space in a suitable and central location.

“The Market Place is the perfect space for this alongside some other surprises we are currently working on. I am sure there will be a lot of interest in this ice rink and I hope the local community and beyond enjoy having such a great family attraction on their doorstep. We are delighted to be involved with this exciting project for the town centre and will be doing our bit to make it a success for our visitors and businesses.”

Cllr Bernard Peters, Deputy Leader for Service Commissioning added: “An ice rink is something people have been asking for, and the authority has delivered it. It is a great sport and provides entertainment for all the family, and given the rink’s proximity to the Meadowside Leisure Centre and the Washlands makes this a real hive of sport and leisure activities.”
